House rules

In your house there might be rules about things like:

  • Are you allowed to have a boyfriend or girlfriend?
  • Are you allowed to go out with friends? If so, do you have a time you have to be home by?
  • Are you allowed to have friends to stay over?
  • Is your boyfriend or girlfriend allowed to stay over in your room?
  • Different families have different rules and values. What’s okay for your friend’s family may not be okay for yours.

Some ways to get house rules negotiable:

  • Be reliable – always call and say where you are, always be home when you say you will. If something happens, call and let your parents know what’s going on.
  • Try your best at school and work
  • Be willing to compromise
  • Remember that trust and respect work both ways – if you behave like an adult you will be respected as an adult. The more you are respected as an adult, the more you will be treated like an adult.

Most people grow up with a set of religious or cultural values. These could be based on the church your family goes to, where you live, your family’s cultural background or your family’s view of right and wrong.

As you grow older, you will meet people with different ideas to yours, you might read books or see films that explain or illustrate different values – this can lead you to make new choices or decisions.
