Sexual orientation and gender identity - Gender identity

Gender identity describes our sense of being male or being female or being something other. Everyone has a gender identity.

Some people are born female – this means they identify physically and emotionally as female.

Some people are born male – this means they identify physically and emotionally as male.

Some people are born intersex – this means they are born with sex chromosomes, genitals or other sexual characteristics that are neither totally male or totally female.

Some people are transsexual – this means they have a gender identity that is different from their physical sex. For example, an individual may be born into a female body but identify as and feel male. Some people use the term “third sex” to describe this.

Some people are bigendered – this means they identify as both male and female, or sometimes feel more male and sometimes feel more female.

Some people may cross dress for personal pleasure or comfort – this means men may dress in women’s clothes or women in men’s clothes. These people may identify as cross dressers or transvestites.
