PUBERTY
1. What are wet dreams?
Wet dreams are something that some (not all) boys and men experience. They are often one of the earlier signs of puberty. They are totally normal, and although the sticky sheets can cause embarrassment, they are nothing to worry about.
Never having a wet dream is also normal.
2. I am 14 years old and haven't heard my periods yet. My friend said I can't get pregnant as I don't have periods, is this true?
It is possible that you can get pregnant just prior to your first period. If you decide to have sex always use protection such as condoms. Using condoms with a water-based lubricant will provide protection against unplanned pregnancy and STIs.
3. All of my friends have their periods, but I don't. Is there something wrong with me?
Everybody goes through puberty in their own unique way. Not having started your period yet doesn't mean something is wrong. However, there are a few possible health issues that could delay or stop you getting your period. If you feel concerned you could visit your doctor.
4. I am only 5 feet 4 inches tall. All of my friends are much taller than me. A couple of years ago we were the same height. When will I grow?
Everybody grows at different rates. You continue to grow into your twenties, so at this stage there is nothing to worry about. There could be a number of reasons affecting your height. This could include your genes, your diet or stage of development.
If you are still worried you could discuss this with a nurse or doctor.
5. All of my friends say that they have had sex. I haven't, and I know I'm not ready. Should I say that I have?
This decision is up to you. Some people might feel awkward and say that they had sex to try and fit in. It may be that some of your friends have not actually had sex but say they have.
There is nothing to be ashamed of. Knowing that you are not ready is fine. Good on you.
6. I have been going through puberty for ages. But none of my school mates have started puberty. Is there something wrong with me?
No, there is nothing wrong with you. Everybody starts puberty when they are ready. Most people start between age 8 and 12, but many start later and some sooner.
