Word Meanings:
Fallopian tube part of the female reproductive system.
Uterus the part of the female reproductive system where a baby grows after a woman has become pregnant. Every month, if a woman doesn't get pregnant, the wall of the uterus breaks down and is shed as her menstrual period (see menstruation).
Ovum this is the female sex cell. Girls are born with about 400,000 of them in their ovaries. When a girl reaches puberty one ovum is released each month . The ovum travels down the fallopian tube and if unprotected sexual intercourse has occurred it may be fertilised by a sperm. Often called an egg.
Ovary where eggs are stored in the female's reproductive system.
Cervix (also called the neck of the uterus). This is a ring of muscles at the top of the vagina. It has a very small opening to allow the blood to pass through it during menstruation. It also allows sperm to pass through during unprotected sexual intercourse. Because the opening is so small a tampon cannot get lost inside the body. During birth the cervix expands to allow the baby out of the uterus.
Vagina part of the female genitals. The vagina connects a woman's uterus to the outside of her body. When a girl or woman becomes sexually aroused the vagina becomes wet or lubricated. The skin inside the vagina is very soft and elastic so that if something goes into the vagina such as a tampon, a finger, or a man's penis during sexual intercourse, the soft folds of skin stretch to let it in. In childbirth the vagina has to stretch a lot to allow the baby out of the mother's body.
Vulva twat, fanny, pussy. Another word for the female genitals. Many girls feel unsure about looking at or touching their vulva. By using a mirror you can learn what you look like, and will notice if anything goes wrong. Becoming familiar with your body can help you understand it, and help you feel more confident.
Clitoris the clitoris is just inside the inner labia and is the most sensitive sexual part of a woman's body. It feels like a small bump, and can be covered by a hood of skin. When stimulated the clitoris helps a woman to have an orgasm, because it is full of nerve endings.
Labia part of a girl's or woman's genitalia, also called lips.
Urethra a thin tube which carries urine from the bladder to the urinary opening. In girls and women it leads to a hole just in front of the vaginal opening. In boys and men it runs down the middle of the penis to a hole at the tip.
Anus the hole at the end of your back passage or rectum, through which your body rids itself of solid waste.
