FAMILY PLANNING ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS WAIKATO MEN’S HOCKEY TEAM

25 September, 2006

“We’re not just here for the girls” is the message from Family Planning as it co-sponsors the Waikato Men’s Hockey Team for the second year running.

FPA Director Health Promotion and Professional Development Frances Bird says the organisation’s sponsorship of the team supports it’s message that men also need to look after their sexual and reproductive health.

“The services offered by Family Planning are well known to most New Zealand women, but traditionally men have been more reluctant to come and see us. However this is changing; over the past few years we have seen an increasing number of men at Family Planning clinics. They attend for a variety of reasons including sexual health checks and vasectomies.

“Just like hockey, sexual health requires teamwork, and a number of men come in with their partners to share decisions around contraception and protection against sexually transmitted infections,” she says. “Family Planning clinics offer friendly, confidential services for men and women.”

The Waikato Men’s Hockey Team is competing this week in the National Senior Men’s Tournament in Palmerston North – an event it won last year.
