Family Planning Executive Director, Dr Gill Greer has been appointed to the International Planned Parenthood Federation’s (IPPF) top job, based in London.
Dr Greer, who has been the Executive Director of Family Planning and Family Planning International Development for the past eight years, will take over the role later in September this year, following the retirement of American, Dr Steven Sinding.
IPPF is an international organisation that has been providing sexual and reproductive services since 1952. It has 150 Member Associations, of which New Zealand Family Planning is one, and millions of volunteers working to support human and community development, family planning, maternal and child health and HIV/AIDS in around 180 countries worldwide – particularly those who are poor, underserved or marginalized.
Dr Greer, who chairs the Asia Pacific Alliance and the Ministry of Health NGO Group, said she was thrilled to accept the position of Director General which was sure to be an exciting challenge.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead such an influential organisation that does so much in so many countries to improve the lives of people. There is still so much to be done though and reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS and linking it to sexual and reproductive health is a priority as is maternal mortality.
“IPPF is an organisation strongly committed to sexual and reproductive health and rights and it is an enormous privilege to help carry on this work around the world.”
Family Planning President, Linda Penno said Dr Greer’s appointment was an exciting opportunity for her professionally and an honour for New Zealand.
“Family Planning has benefited enormously from Dr Greer’s highly skilled advocacy and communication skills. She has led the organisation through some particularly challenging years when funding issues threatened the delivery of important sexual and reproductive health services in New Zealand. She has been a staunch advocate for the delivery of comprehensive sexuality education and continues to push for monitoring that ensures it is delivered consistently in New Zealand secondary schools.
“Dr Greer has also made an significant impact in the international arena through the Family Planning International Development Unit with work in the Asia Pacific region and we are heartened that her resolve, courage and passion will now benefit IPPF and the wider international community,” Ms Penno said.
Dr Greer has been awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Family Planning.
