Dr Gill Greer appointed Director-General of the International Planned Parenthood Federation
Friday 16 June 2006
Executive Director of the Family Planning Association of New Zealand, Dr Gill Greer, has today been appointed as the new Director-General of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). Dr Greer will be taking up her post based at IPPF’s London office in September 2006 following the retirement of current Director-General, Dr Steven Sinding.
The post of Director-General of IPPF is one of the most challenging in the field of international development. As the strongest global voice for sexual and reproductive health and rights, IPPF’s network of 150 national Member Associations works to provide vital, often life saving, services to some of the poorest and most marginalized people in 182 countries worldwide. IPPF carries out this work in the face of powerful opposition from conservative governments and religious groups to sexual and reproductive health and rights and, more generally, women’s rights.
Dr Greer is a highly experienced and committed sexual and reproductive health professional and has been the Executive Director of the New Zealand Family Planning Association since 1998. She also chairs the Asia Pacific Alliance (a network of 30 NGOs in seven countries), and the New Zealand NGO Ministry of Health Forum (a network of more than 100 NGOs). Dr Greer has been a member of the New Zealand government delegations to the United Nations General Assembly Session on HIV/AIDS (2006), the United Nations World Summit (2005), the Commission on the Status of Women (2005) and the Commission on Population and Development (2004).
Dr. Greer has been awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to family planning.
Dr Greer said, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead such an influential organization that does so much in so many countries to improve the lives of women, men and young people. It is a privilege to follow in the footsteps of Steven Sinding, who has been an inspirational leader and committed advocate for the work of IPPF, and who has had such a positive impact on the organization’s global standing. IPPF is an organization strongly committed to sexual and reproductive health and rights and it is an honour to carry on this work around the world.”
“There are big challenges facing IPPF in coming years, not least of which are reducing the impact of high maternal mortality rates in much of the developing world, including addressing the devastating consequences of unsafe abortion; finding the resources to meet the enormous unmet need for family planning globally; and reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS through linking prevention, treatment and care programmes more centrally to sexual and reproductive health.”
Dr. Jacqueline Sharpe, President of IPPF, said, “I’m delighted that IPPF has found from within its own family a new Director-General who is a highly skilled, deeply committed and motivated woman capable of taking the Federation forward in the coming years. Dr Greer has a deep knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights and is an experienced advocate and leader. Her humanity and passion for improving the lives of individuals through improved health are well known, and everyone at IPPF looks forward to working with her.”
Dr. Steven Sinding, Director-General, IPPF, said, “I have known Gill Greer for many years, and can honestly say that she is an excellent choice of Director-General for IPPF. She commands the highest respect amongst her colleagues at IPPF and in the global sexual and reproductive health and rights community. I’m convinced that the organization will thrive under her passionate and committed leadership over the coming years, and I wish her the very best success in this new challenge.”
