Volunteer for FPA

Family Planning needs volunteers to help us to work towards improving the sexual and reproductive health of New Zealanders.
Volunteer experience is also a good way to get current work experience- whether you are new to New Zealand, or just starting your career.
Being a volunteer for FPA means you can help in many ways including becoming a member of our National Council.

Some of the things that volunteers have done with FPA in the past:
- Worked on our stalls at events such as 'The Big Day Out' and the 'Coca Cola Careers Expo'
- Contributed to health promotion campaigns like the 'Summer Safer Sex Campaign'- project management, talking to young people, handing out condoms and information
- Researched information for our award winning resources· Helped with health promotion advertisements on radio or television
- Participated in focus groups to give feedback on resources-e.g. our website design, or 'The Word'
- Represented New Zealand at IPPF (International Planned Parenthood Federation) and at international sexual and reproductive health conferences
- Served on FPA's National Council (after joining as a FPA member)
- Helped to counter misinformation and reinforce a positive view of sexuality through our advocacy network- e.g. writing letters to editors
What should I do if I want to volunteer?
Go to the Contact us page and work out where your closest Regional office is located. Then email, ring or write to the Regional Director of that office. Let them know that you would like to be a volunteer and the kinds of things you might like to do- or the experience you already have.
FPA might not have something for you to do immediately, but we will keep your contact details. We will let you know as soon as we find something we think you might like to do.
What volunteers have said about working with FPA.
"I worked for FPA during my summer break from Law Studies at Victoria University, researching topics for a resource on Sexuality and the Law. It was great working on a project that is going to help people have a better understanding of the law."
"Volunteering in the FPA library has been a useful way of putting my overseas experience into practise. This work keeps me in touch with the subject; it gives me access to the latest resources and updates. I get to meet mentors here, people who work in the same field. I can build relationships, network and learn about possible upcoming jobs."
