UNGASS on HIV/AIDS

In July 2001, the United Nations Secretary General called a General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) to acknowledge the extent of the HIV/AIDS epidemic – 42 million people are living with HIV/AIDS and more than 20 million have died. Around 95% of those affected are from developing countries.

FPAID was involved in preparations for the meeting, providing input into New Zealand’s position and Draft Declaration. FPAID also briefed NZ Minister of Health, Hon. Annette King, who lead the NZ delegation.

At the conclusion of UNGASS, member states adopted a declaration of commitment to scale up efforts with specific targets and time-frames to turn the tide of the epidemic.
